How many boxes do you need to move?
5 min read
Honest rules of thumb for box counts by home size, which sizes to use for what, and why buying local beats guessing.
Rules of thumb, not exact numbers
No two households pack the same, so treat any count as a starting point, not a promise. As rough rules of thumb: a studio often takes around 10–20 boxes, a one-bedroom 20–30, a two-bedroom 30–50, and a three-bedroom or larger 50–80 and up. Heavy readers, collectors and full garages push those numbers higher; minimalists come in under.
Mix your sizes
An all-medium order sounds simple but packs badly. A workable mix leans on mediums for most rooms, smalls for dense and heavy things, and a handful of larges for light, bulky items like bedding and pillows. Wardrobe-style and tall boxes are worth it for hanging clothes if you want them to arrive unwrinkled.
Heavy items go in small boxes
The classic moving mistake is a large box full of books. It bursts, or it simply can't be lifted. Books, dishes, tools, canned goods and paper all belong in small boxes; save the big ones for the light stuff. Your back, and the box, will both survive the move.
Books, dishes and storage: consider double wall
For the heaviest boxes, anything that will be stacked high, or boxes headed into storage for months, double-wall board is worth the small premium. It resists crushing at the bottom of a stack far better than standard single wall. Our guide on single vs double wall covers when the upgrade actually pays.

FAQ
Is it better to buy too many boxes or too few?
If your supplier is far away, slightly over is safer than running out on packing day. If you're buying local, buy close to your estimate — we break bundles and offer same-day plant pickup, so topping up mid-move is easy.
What box sizes do I need for a kitchen?
Mostly smalls: dishes, glassware and pantry goods are heavy and fragile, and small boxes keep the weight manageable. Double wall is a smart upgrade for stacked plates and glassware, with medium boxes for pots, small appliances and bulky-but-light items.
Where can I get moving boxes same-day in the Dallas area?
At our plant at 2050 Forest Ln in Garland — in-stock sizes are usually ready for free same-day pickup, and we deliver by truck across the Dallas area with the fee shown at checkout.
