Box sizes explained: a practical chart
5 min read
What small, medium and large actually mean in corrugated, which sizes suit which products, and how to match a box size to your item without shipping air.
How box sizes are written
Every box size reads Length × Width × Height, and the numbers are inside dimensions, the space your product actually gets. A 12×9×6 has a 12" by 9" opening and is 6" deep inside. The outside is slightly larger because of board thickness, which matters when boxes have to nest or fit a shelf. If the ordering convention is new to you, our guide on how to measure a box covers it in three minutes.
Small boxes: 10 inches and under
Small boxes suit accessories, cosmetics, spare parts, phone cases, jewelry and anything dense. They're also the right call for heavy items, because a small box full of hardware or books stays liftable while a large one doesn't. Small boxes pack tight, ship cheap, and rarely need much void fill.
Medium boxes: roughly 12 to 16 inches
This is the e-commerce workhorse range. Sizes like 12×12×12 and 14×14×14 handle the bulk of online orders: apparel, multi-item shipments, shoes, kitchenware, subscription kits. If you only stock a couple of sizes, most sellers land here, with a small box alongside for dense single items.
Large boxes: 18 inches and up — and when not to size up
Large boxes earn their keep for light, bulky cargo: linens, pillows, lampshades, bundles of clothing. What they're not good for is "playing it safe." Carriers bill on dimensional weight, so an oversized box is charged as if it were heavier, and the extra void fill costs money too. Size up only when the contents genuinely need the room.

FAQ
What's the most common shipping box size?
Medium cube sizes like 12×12×12 are the everyday workhorses of e-commerce shipping. But the most common size isn't automatically the right one — the right size is the tightest box that safely fits your item.
Are box sizes inner or outer dimensions?
Inner. A 12×9×6 box gives you 12" × 9" × 6" of usable space inside; the outside is slightly larger due to board thickness.
Can one box size work for everything I ship?
Rarely. One size means shipping air on small orders and squeezing big ones. Most small businesses do well standardizing on two or three sizes: a small for dense items and one or two mediums for the rest.
