Box styles explained: RSC, FOL, mailers & more

4 min read

What RSC, full-overlap, half-slotted, die-cut mailer and telescoping boxes are, and when to use each.

RSC — Regular Slotted Container

The everyday shipping box. All flaps are the same length and the two outer flaps meet in the middle. It's the most economical and most common style, ideal for the majority of shipping and storage needs. Most boxes we make are RSC.

FOL — Full Overlap

Like an RSC, but the outer flaps fully overlap, giving extra stacking strength and protection on the top and bottom. A good choice for heavier products or rough handling.

HSC — Half Slotted Container

An RSC with flaps on only one end, leaving the other end open. Useful as a tray or when you need to slide tall items in from the top.

Die-cut mailer

A one-piece box that folds flat and locks together without tape, with a tuck flap. Popular for ecommerce and subscription boxes because it's quick to assemble and presents well on unboxing.

Telescoping box

A two-piece box where a lid slides over a base. Good for tall or odd-shaped items, or when you need an adjustable height.

Which should you choose?

For most shipping and moving, an RSC in the right size is the most cost-effective choice. Step up to full-overlap or double-wall for heavy or fragile loads. For branded ecommerce, a die-cut mailer is worth the premium. Need a style we don't stock? Request a quote.

FAQ

What is an RSC box?

A Regular Slotted Container: the standard shipping box where all flaps are equal length and the outer flaps meet in the middle. It's the most common and economical style.

What's the difference between RSC and full-overlap?

In a full-overlap (FOL) box the outer flaps overlap completely, adding stacking strength and edge protection, which is better for heavy or rough-handled shipments.

Which box style is best for ecommerce branding?

A die-cut mailer: it folds flat, locks without tape, and presents well during unboxing.
